Company Description

Today, more and more women are looking to take control of how they give birth to their child. The Good Birth Company was created to help you organise and experience the benefits of using water for relaxation, labour and birth.

The Problem

When Adam MacLean, MD of the Good Birth Company originally set up his company he initially bought "off-the-shelf" pools, but soon found that he wanted to add extra functionality to what was a very basic design.

He then approached a Chinese factory to manufacture his concept. The prototype was excellent, however, when they went to production there was an high failure rate, the factory tested each pool, so they were identified before they left the factory, but it was still unacceptable. To Adam creating a high quality pool was of vital importance to him, he didn't want to take the risk of someone receiving a sub-standard pool and so he investigated ways to solve the problem.

He tried working directly with the factory but it was not leading to a solution and so he investigated on the internet and discovered MotionTouch and its consultancy service.

The Challenge

Motiontouch were given the challenge of liaising directly with the factory on the Good Birth Company's behalf to try and improve the quality levels on the production runs.

The Process

Adam says "When I went to visit MotionTouch it became apparent that they had seen this situation many times before and we agreed to set about recovering the situation. They advised that switching factories would not solve the situation, it would probably just be repeated and that we should work with the factory on a detailed basis instead".

The first thing that MotionTouch arranged was for its quality control department to contact Adam and develop a quality checklist and audit the factory to see if it was capable of achieving the standards required and if so how to make it happen. The factory passed and so MotionTouch instructed a third party testing company to test the next production run.

The Solution

Overall, MotionTouch were able to rescue the situation, by going back to basics and:

• Writing a specification document on the product and what was required from the factory
• Audit the factory to ensure it had the necessary capabilities
• Carry out an analysis of the materials being used
• Run a quality and testing system on the manufacturing

"I could have tried to do all this myself, but for a few pennies more, I had MotionTouch liaising with the factory and testing company on my behalf, they were able to liaise with them in Chinese on my behalf, which was an absolute revelation, the factory and testing company had absolute clarity on what was needed and as a result the quality levels rose dramatically.

MotionTouch were able to make my life a lot less stressful. The test results are first sent over in Chinese, and then the English version follows a few days later. Because of MotionTouch's language capabilities, by the time I receive the report, they've already spoken to the factory and ironed out any problems, which is wonderful" says Adam.

The Product

The birthing pools come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including hexagonal and oval and you can buy or rent them. They are easy to use, safe and comfortable.

The Good Birth Company has also designed a solution called "Birth-Pool-In-A-Box". These pools have been designed and developed specifically for waterbirth and result from close consultation with water baby mothers and waterbirth specialist midwives. The result is convenient inflatable pools with added safety to mother and baby, usability, hygiene and comfort features.

The Outcome

In conclusion, Adam says "MotionTouch proved incredible value for money; things are now running like clockwork. I didn't realise before but I was part of the problem, I couldn't liaise with them in Chinese or keep an eye on what was happening every second, which you do require when running a project like this, it's a specialist full-time occupation and I had a business to run. MotionTouch enabled me to stay in business which is phenomenal and the return on investment has been extraordinary.
